Highland Arts and Athletics is proud to present the 2024 Strongman Competition, as part of the Lone Star Celtic Festival and Highland Games! This competition is unsanctioned and open to athletes of all skill-levels.
Please note: This competition is separate from the Highland Games competition. You are not required to register for the Highland Games to participate in the Strongman competition, although you are welcome to do so. The Strongman competition will be capped at 30 athletes total.
This competition will feature three events: a natural stone overhead press, a crucifix hold, and a max-distance Texas-shaped Húsafell/shield carry. (Yes, you read that right!)
Athletes will press a series of natural stones overhead in the allotted time, beginning with the lightest stone. The athlete will start behind the stone and await the judge’s press command. Upon the go command, the athlete will press each stone once, beginning with the lightest stone, moving on to the next stone, and so on, until reaching the final heaviest stone. The athletes’ attempt ends when the time cap expires, or the athlete has elected to stop. Athletes may not “skip" a stone and must press in succession. The athlete who has pressed the most stones in the allotted time frame will win the event. Ties will be broken by time.
Time cap: 60 seconds
Allowed: Supportive gear such as grip shirts, belts, knee sleeves, knee wraps, wrist wraps, and elbow sleeves. Athletes may use stone sleeves or taped forearms.
Not allowed: Tacky, tacky spray, gloves, deadlift suits.
The athletes will begin by holding one sword in each hand. Stacked boards will be placed underneath each of the swords based on the athlete's height. Time begins when the athlete raises their arms to their sides and reaches parallel with the ground. Athlete will hold the crucifix position for as long as possible, keeping arms parallel to the ground. The athlete may not raise arms above parallel during their hold and will receive one warning if this occurs. Repeated offenses will end the athlete's time. Athlete's time will end once the tip of one of the swords touches the measurement boards. The athlete with the longest time in their respective class will win the event.
Time cap: None
Allowed: Chalk, supportive gear such as grip shirts, belts, knee sleeves, knee wraps, and elbow sleeves.
Not allowed: Wrist wraps, tacky of any kind, gloves.
Upon the start command, the athlete will carry a large loadable shield in the shape of the Lonestar state. The shield will be picked from a barrel, keg, or other similar-height object. Athletes will be guided by a walker, and will carry the shield as far as possible, with a turn every 50 feet. Athletes' time will end when the shield is dropped, or the time cap is reached. The athlete with the longest distance covered in their respective class will win the event.
Time cap: 90 seconds
Allowed: Chalk, gloves, supportive gear such as grip shirts, belts, knee sleeves, knee wraps, wrist wraps, and elbow sleeves.
Not allowed: Tacky of any kind.
PRIZES/AWARDS: Prizes will be awarded for 1st to 3rd place in each weight/age class.
